Security: Lock Your Screen

Teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators have access to a lot of confidential information. For example, student grades, ID numbers, contact information, home addresses, and birth dates. There is a misconception that data breaches only happen when a system is hacked by some social deviant. In reality, it often results from users leaving their computers unattended (read about Mahtomedi Middle School) or making passwords visible (e.g., sticky notes on a computer). To avoid these common user errors, follow the tips and guidelines below:

  • Keep passwords private: Don't share with colleagues, students, or substitutes.
  • Lock your computer screen: Don't leave your computer logged in / unattended.
  • Windows laptop/desktop: On the keyboard, press the Windows ❖ + L keys
  • Chromebook: On the keyboard, press the Search 🔍 + L keys
