TVs, phones, laptops, and tablets... all ages are consuming and creating more digital media than ever before. So as educators, should we be concerned about adding to our student's daily screen time? Of course, but not all screen time is the same. Instead of focusing only on screen time, Common Sense Education advises teachers and students to consume media in more deliberate and mindful ways... what they call "media balance."
National Screen-Free Week is May 2-8. It's promoted as "....a fun way to reduce our dependence on digital entertainment, including television, video games, smartphones, tablets, and computers. It’s a chance for children—and adults—to power down and reconnect with the world around them." I encourage you to participate by talking with your students about media balance and choices.
