Free Reading Websites

NPAS teachers use a variety of free reading websites to enhance lessons and engage students. Elementary and secondary language arts teachers may be familiar with most of these, but I thought it might be helpful to list the most common ones in one place. Let me know if I'm missing one of your favorites.

  • Khan Academy Kids (grades PreK-1): A free iPad app for children ages 2-8. NPAS teachers and students in grades K-1 can access it via the Clever portal.
  • Storyline Online (grades PreK-3): Notable celebrities bring classic and contemporary stories to life with vibrant illustrations.
  • Epic! (grades PreK-6): Explore a diverse library of ebooks, audiobooks, and educational videos catering to all ages and interests.
  • ReadWorks (grades K-12): Cultivate strong comprehension with engaging texts and evidence-based strategies tailored to different reading levels.
  • ReadTheory (grades K-12): Personalize the learning journey with adaptive exercises that dynamically adjust to each child's needs.
  • CommonLit (grades 3-12): A comprehensive literacy program with thousands of reading lessons, full-year ELA curriculum, and assessments.
  • Newsela Lite (grades 3-12): Each week, Newsela offers four leveled news articles to teachers and students for free.
